Seattle/Tacoma Alimony Attorney

Spousal maintenance is a payment from one spouse to the other to equalize incomes and standard of living. It can refer to temporary support while your divorce is pending, and it can refer to post-divorce spousal support, commonly known as alimony.

Temporary maintenance is a preliminary order of the court and is determined by the need of the recipient, and the ability to pay by the paying spouse. Long-term spousal maintenance after the divorce is a more complicated matter. Divorce lawyer Bruce Clement has 30 years of experience in divorce and family law. He has negotiated alimony as part of divorce and property settlements, and he has gone to court to seek or resist alimony on behalf of his clients.

Permanent alimony is not a favored concept in Washington State. To get a favorable award, your attorney must be skilled and determined. Many judges see maintenance as only a short-term remedy to allow a lesser-earning spouse to become self-sufficient. However, permanent alimony is often appropriate, especially when a spouse is beyond a certain age, lacks a recent employment history, or has an illness or disability.

The court considers many factors in alimony, but the primary considerations are length of the marriage, the need for financial assistance and the other spouse's ability to pay. If Mr. Clement believes alimony is likely to be awarded in your case, he can help you determine how to litigate or negotiate a favorable settlement.
