While no one wants a divorce, sometimes there are no other options. Once you have made up your mind, it is critical to proceed cautiously. You do not want to serve our spouse with divorce papers right away. In fact, there are a few steps you should take first so that you can make it out of the divorce proceedings faster and better.
Conduct a digital audit
Most married couples share their digital lives together. They know each other’s email passwords and have access to each other’s social media accounts. If you plan to divorce, then you may want to use a different email for the time being. All communications with your attorney should go through this separate account. You may even want to consider making all divorce-related calls through a different phone just in case you get a call at an inopportune time.
Start saving money
Even if you and your spouse share a bank account, there are steps you can take to begin saving money. You do not want to hide any assets because that will only lead to trouble down the road. However, you can begin to cut back on certain superfluous expenses.
Get all the paperwork in order
Instead of stressing out at the last minute, you should gather all relevant paperwork before you serve the divorce papers to your spouse. That includes making copies of all your bank accounts, properties and investments. You also want copies of your marriage certificate and tax information. You have no idea how easy or difficult it will be to get everything once you start the proceedings, so it is best to start early.
