How to prepare for supervised visitation sessions

On Behalf of | Dec 16, 2019 | Divorce |

Judges may order supervised visitation whenever they believe a child could be in danger while alone with a parent. While it may be frustrating for parents to have limited contact with their children, it is important that they make the most of each visit. Parents are encouraged to memorize the visitation schedule as well as any restrictions that are in place while the visits occur. They are also encouraged to follow the schedule as closely as possible.

During a visitation session, a parent should put aside any worries or concerns that he or she may have. Instead, the focus should be solely on the child and ensuring that the minor has an enjoyable experience. During a visit, it may be possible to read stories, play games or take part in other activities meant to strengthen the bond between a parent and child.

Custodial parents are encouraged to help their children prepare for these visits before they happen. Children should have access to a calendar that shows when each visit will take place and where it will occur. Custodial parents should also let their children talk about the visit and express their feelings on their own terms. Regardless of how parents feel about each other, they should never talk negatively about each other in front of their children.

After a divorce, it is natural for mothers and fathers to want as much parenting time as possible. In some cases, parents may be able to negotiate custody or visitation agreements on their own. However, a judge will still need to approve those plans before they go into effect to ensure that the child’s best interest is preserved. An attorney may help a parent show a court that the parent is fit to have unsupervised visitation or custody rights.
