Divorce can be emotionally and financially stressful

If a Washington couple wants to end their marriage, they have several decisions to make. Some agree to attend counseling sessions to try to patch things up. Others opt to file for divorce. Doing so typically set off a sequence of events, many of which can be highly stressful, especially if the couple has children.

Years ago, there was a negative stigma attached to divorce, which meant many spouses chose to stay in unhappy relationships. Nowadays, there is less social backlash for deciding to end an unhappy marriage and move on in life. That does not make it any less challenging for parents. To make sure one is as financially stable as possible after divorce, it helps to set up a strong support network from the start.

An experienced financial adviser can review a concerned spouse’s portfolio and make recommendations as to what to do or not do during property division or child support proceedings. Both types of proceedings typically have a significant financial impact on both spouses. In addition to seeking financial advice, it is helpful to discuss one’s case with an experienced family law attorney as well.

It takes time to come to terms with the idea that a marriage did not work out as one had hoped. However, divorce certainly does not have to ruin a person’s life. A Washington family law attorney can help a client (especially one who is a parent) protect his or her rights and financial interests in court. An attorney can also remain on hand to address legal obstacles that surface down the line; for instance, if a child custody or child support problem arises after the divorce is final and a parent does not feel equipped to handle it alone.
