Do you have to attend settlement meetings when the marriage is a sham?

On Behalf of | Apr 19, 2013 | High-Asset Divorce |

When New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries married reality star Kim Kardashian in August 2011, nothing appeared out of the ordinary. But when the couple filed for divorce just 72 days after tying the knot, people across the nation, including here in Washington, began to speculate whether the marriage had actually been a stunt created by producers for one of Kim’s reality shows.

Although Kim Kardashian denies that her marriage to Humphries was a sham, it doesn’t seem as if he believes this sentiment. Originally, Humphries had hoped to take their case to divorce court in May, but when he was informed that it would interfere with basketball games and practices, he realized that his high asset divorce would need to be solved by other means.

It appears as if the couple decided on divorce settlement meetings, per the prenuptial agreement they signed prior to getting married. But Humphries is said to have been absent at the first meeting and also missed the second meeting just last week. As one source close to Humphries explained, he likely didn’t see the importance of going to the meetings when the marriage wasn’t real to begin with. According to the source, his basketball team meant more to him at this point than the divorce and explained that it was an easy decision for him not to attend the meetings.

Although the exact specifics of the settlement have not been released, it’s likely that the asset division will mirror what was agreed upon in the prenup. As for the couple, while Kim has said that she had hoped the marriage would have worked out, Humphries tweeted recently that he couldn’t be happier that everything is finally over.
