The top reasons women file for divorce

Washington readers may have heard that around half of all U.S. marriages end in divorce. However, they might not be aware that approximately 80% of all divorces are initiated by women. There are a few reasons why.

According to experts, one of the most common reasons women seek a divorce is that their husbands do not understand or does not care about their feelings, causing them to put up an emotional wall. Another common reason is that a husband fails to show enough love or appreciation to his wife, causing her to feel frustrated and alone. Likewise, a husband’s lack of romantic gestures or failure to meet his wife’s needs at home are also common reasons women choose to end their marriage.

It should come as no surprise that cheating is also a big reason women file. Even if a wife initially tries to forgive her husband’s infidelity and move on, getting over the betrayal can eventually prove impossible, driving her to draw up divorce papers. In addition, money problems often lead women to get divorced. If a marriage lacks financial security or a couple frequently fights over money issues, the wife may look for a way out. Additionally, substance, physical, and emotional abuse are also top reasons women give up on their marriages. A husband’s trouble with alcohol, anger or emotional cruelty may not show up while a couple is just dating, causing a woman to be blindsided by these issues after she walks down the aisle. However, she will eventually file for divorce when she can’t take it anymore.

Individuals facing the end of their marriage might wish to contact a divorce attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can often help negotiate favorable agreements on property division and other applicable issues.
