Hollywood icon William Shatner is age 89 and worth approximately $100 million. He also happens to have just finalized his fourth divorce. Several issues can make a marital split complex and stressful for Washington spouses or celebrities, such as high-net worth, longevity of 20 years or more, as well as having multiple past divorce settlements.
In Shatner’s case, he and his most recent wife signed a prenuptial agreement before their wedding day. The terms included a clause stating that, if they were to later divorce, Shatner would have sole rights to all of his Star Trek royalties. While some people hesitate to sign prenups because they find them unromantic, others have learned just how beneficial they can be.
The former couple co-owned four horses, and they agreed to each take two in the divorce. The Shatners also owned several homes during marriage, one of which was used as a training facility for their horses. Shatner reportedly got that house as part of the settlement.
Shatner is certainly no stranger to sorrow, as one of his wives who struggled with alcoholism accidentally drowned in their pool. For the most part, however, the 89-year-old Star Trek star says he does no longer lets life’s issues make him unhappy at his age. He is pleased with his divorce settlement and ready to move on. Not every Washington spouse can say the same, as some have great difficulty resolving disputes. In similar Washington cases, it is always best to turn to an experienced family law attorney for support because an attorney can clarify state laws, make recommendations and help protect a client’s rights and financial interests in divorce.
